Closing the Belief Gap: Stories in Urban Schooling and Reform
Education is one of the most critical levers we have to transform the life trajectories of young people—especially low-income students of color. Sara Ray Stoelinga AB’95 AM’01 PhD’04 will discuss key issues in urban schooling and school reform, such as inequities in school funding, the challenges faced by low-income families, school choice, and school accountability policies. Stoelinga will examine these themes through stories of students, classrooms, schools, and districts, drawing upon more than two decades of experience as a leader in urban education. These stories will illuminate some of the most pressing challenges facing urban schools, the work of the Urban Education Institute, and reasons to be hopeful about the future of public education in America.

Sara Ray Stoelinga AB’95 AM’01 PhD’04 is the Sara Liston Spurlark Director of the Urban Education Institute and a clinical professor on the Committee on Education. In her 20 years at UEI, Stoelinga has served in a variety of roles, from intern to researcher to UEI architect to director. In 2015 she received the Quantrell Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching and has written extensively on school reform history, policy, and improvement.
